New York Is...

New York is...

Children of all religious, racial and ethnic backgrounds coming together to play tag at a local playground.  The United Nations and it's world leaders should learn from these children.

Greek salad as an appetizer, Thai food as the main course, frozen yogurt for desert and a Dunkin Donuts Hazelnut Iced Coffee on the way back to the train... all four different restaurants on the same block.  The flavors of the world come alive in my city.

A concrete jungle with sky scrapers tickleling the skirts of heaven.  Huge protected parks to get lost in.  Both extremes within a short driving distance from each other.

Residential neighborhoods where neighbors still sit on the stoops and share the events of their day.  Corporate neighborhoods where your doorman is your best friend. Multi-million dollar luxury apartments next to beautiful and humble, single family homes.

The cultural hub of the world.  Broadway plays, movie premieres, museums for every taste, concerts and music events for everyone, the ballet, Radio City Music Call, Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, etc.  That's just to name a few.

New York is New Yawk... with Brooklynites, Queensonites, Bronxites and New Yawkers; Mets fans and Yankee fans, Knicks fans and Nets fans, Giants fans and Jets fans, Ranger fans and Islander fans, and all the outside fans that sneak into our city and represent their teams' colors.

New York is vibrant and quiet and noisy and fast and slow and loud and introverted and extraverted and intense and smooth and dark and light and full and empty and more and more and more.

New York is everything, but more importantly, it is the place I choose to call home.

The Manhattan Club

Dear Friends,

I've been a New Yorker for 39 years now and I just recently discovered that NYC has timeshare.  Every time I've thought of timeshare, I've thought of condo/hotel style apartments in Florida and the Caribbean that offer two or three swimming pools, beaches, great natural outdoor attractions, perhaps some theme parks, and always hot weather.  Today I know those are just a small fraction of the diverse types of timeshares throughout the world.

Time share in Manhattan?  Even when I heard that there are timeshares in colder places, I thought the colder timeshares would be in places where the attraction was a ski resort.  I started picturing places in Colorado, Upstate New York, Canada, and other fun ski places. I then found out that large urban cities have been offering timeshare properties for a very long time.  I still had no idea we had this in New York.

I've now learned about two timeshare programs that exist in New York City.  The first is a name brand timeshare; the Hilton timeshare.  As with any other name brand, the name brings with it a hefty price tag, and is sometimes limited to the name brand itself.  The Hilton timeshare is a good program if you are prepared to pay a lot of money for it. What I also learned by researching Hilton is that there are different types of timeshare out there.  Some are deeded to a program (points or weeks) and others are deeded to a real and tangible property, with a deed, title and ownership that you can will, rent, use, gift, claim in your taxes, build equity on and even sell if the need ever comes up.

The second model made better sense to me. Today I'm speaking about The Manhattan Club.  It's a Midtown Manhattan timeshare. It has the highest satisfaction rate in the entire RCI timeshare world.  It is rated as the highest demand timeshare in the entire world. It's trade power is greater than any other timeshare.  Your one week of ownership exchanges for 2-8 weeks in any other RCI world resort, regardless of the location.  While most timeshares sell you the swimming pool, beach, and sun, The Manhattan Club sells you the opportunity to be in New York City, across the street from Carnegie Hall, up the block from Central Park, surrounded by arts, museums, shopping, shows, concerts, businesses, exclusive NYC attractions, city tours, great architecture, fine dining, fun foods, history, etc.  That's all great but I feel the greatest part of ownership in the Manhattan Club is that it gives the common folk the ability to invest their money in a Midtown Manhattan property that is deeded in perpetuity, and which is in a part of Manhattan that has NOT suffered a loss in value through the real estate crash of 2007/2008.

So what am I saying?  I'm saying that I love this product and believe in this product so much that I decided to join their sales force. I'm there now, and I'm doing well only because I'm not peddling snake oil or a Multi-Level-Marketing "opportunity."  I am selling happiness, vacation time, attainable dreams, a real investment, a solid product, and a legacy in the GREATEST city in the world.  I sell something real and tangible that works.

Why do I do it?  Because the first person I ever sold to walked out and called me a week later saying that they were starting to wonder if they had made the right choice.  I told this person to choose a weekend trip and use her RCI Points from The Manhattan Club to get her the trip. I asked her to call me when that sparkling moment made bells go off in her mind because she was now sure she had done the right thing. She used RCI to book a weekend trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.  She was standing knee high in the crystal blue Caribbean water when she felt the need to call me.  She ran out of the water and asked the concierge for a phone. She placed a long distance call that would be charged to her room. I was with a client and couldn't answer my phone. She left a message, and it went word for word as follows:

"George, I don't care that you didn't pick up because I just had that feeling you said I would have. I'm in the water, knee deep, and for the first time in a long time I'm not on vacation worrying about how much it cost me to pay for the accommodations.  I'm here paying $139 for the huge resort condominium, with automatic upgrades, for three days.  I'm not paying $139 for each day, but $139 total for all three days, and I got discounts on the flight, the food, the drinks and on the attractions.  I paid less than a 3rd of what I would have paid before, and I got 10 times as much.  George, thank you for not letting me change my mind. I hated you for talking me into this. Now I love you for not letting me talk myself out of it."

This is why I'm at The Manhattan Club.  If you want to see a full presentation to see if this is something that works for you, contact me and schedule an appointment. You have nothing to loose. It's a free presentation. You have everything to gain. It is a life changing experience.

Available for ALL TYPES OF EVENTS!!
1048 Wyckoff Ave. Ridgewood, NY 11385

If you are the type of individual that enjoys a good hand rolled cigar, rolled and packaged by life long, third and fourth generation cigar experts, and want to do so without having to put a huge dent in your wallet, you have to visit Richie (the owner) at Caballeros.  Located across the street from the L train Halsey stop, on the border of Brooklyn and Queens, just a couple of minutes off the Jackie Robinson Parkway.  A spot that has plenty of street parking, and is safe enough for my grandmother to walk by, this place is ideally situated to make everyone happy.  I love visiting the guys at this cigar shop on Thursdays for their live web show, or Fridays after work.  It's a great way to unwind.  Obviously, if you are not a cigar smoker this place is NOT for you.  But for those that do enjoy a good cigar here and then and don't want to go with the commercial, pre-packaged cigars sold in most smoke shops, this is your new hot spot.  OH, and please don't think that this operation is a small time operation. Richie's family is the exclusive supplier of a huge New York and Nationwide cigar scene started by Hip Hop Artist Jay-Z at this 40/40 Club.  Richie's family happens to supply some of the most upscale weddings throughout the United States. Still, because you are getting your inventory directly from the source, you can enjoy a cigar for a fraction of what commercial retailers would charge, and enjoy the cigar in the company of one of the industry's originators.  Come through and enjoy the real thing.  Tell Richie that George L.

Top Shelf Blue Hawaiian

New Apollo
502 Grand Street
Brooklyn, NY 11211
(718) 387-1773

I walked into this Chinese restaurant on the corner of Union and Grand Street expecting to smell greasy take out, and have a quick in and out experience while ordering some Chicken Wings and Pork Fried Rice (not healthy but who the hell cares). It was a Thursday evening, back in 2000, around 6PM. I couldn't believe what I saw.

There were people crowding around a bar that is situated right at the entrance of the restaurant. Professionals and Wanna-Be Hip Hop Thugs all together. Everyone was laughing, talking and ordering over and over again... "Large Blue Hawaiian" or "Large Pina Colada".  The restaurant has just five or six tables, and they were all taken and people were standing around the tables with their friends. The place was crowded, but no one seemed to care.

I decided to order one of these drinks. I wanted a Blue Hawaiian. So I waited behind four people at the small counter/bar in the front, and asked for a Blue Hawaiian. I then heard a familiar voice from one of the tables in the back. It was one of my friends from church (yes, some of us Catholics like to meet up for a drink). I took my drink and walked to the back to see a few of my friends there. There was no open seat so I shook hands and turned towards the door. My friends seemed surprised and asked me to stay, and so I did. Keep in mind I said there were no seats.

Before I could say a word, one of the waiters at the place (yes, this tiny place has waiters) comes over and asks what I'll be having. I looked on the table and saw that the guys had a nice arrangement of food on there so I chose a couple of the dishes I saw, "General Tso Chicken with Pork Friend Rice". The waiter walked away and I was there, standing, wondering if I was ever going to get a seat. My friends' table was next to a booth. There were two guys and a girl sitting at this booth which I thought could seat six comfortably. One of the guys taps me on my elbow and says "yo, sit here." I didn't know the guy and he didn't know the guys I was about to eat with but I figured I should sit and be thankful for the invite. I sat down, they all introduced themselves to me, then to the guys I was about to eat with, and then started joking and talking with us as if we had all been life long friends. I have never been a shy person so I jumped right in. Oh, I must mention that they all had either a Blue Hawaiian or a Pina Colada in front of them.

I took my drink out, talked, dove right into my food when it came (it was GREAT), and ended up staying there until about 8:30 PM. Two and a half hours at a Chinese restaurant... not my usual scene. Still, I have to tell you guys, I had the time of my life.

The spot quickly became one of my favorite hangouts. I would pass by on Tuesdays with my friends from the Most Holy Trinity Jornada Group (young adults group from the local Catholic church). I would go there on Fridays before going out and ordered the usual, a LARGE Blue Hawaiian.  I've met clients there for lunch and they've all left happy. Everyone in the neighborhood knows this place and it is visited by all types (pros and not so pro alike). The regulars all know each other. On any given evening you can spot a family on one booth and a bunch of singles on another. Everyone greets each other and orders food in Spanish, English and even Italian. I can honestly say I love this spot.

I celebrated my birthday a couple of weeks ago. I asked my friends for something simple. Come over to my place and celebrate with me. My best friend asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I told her I just wanted a Blue Hawaiian from New Apollo. She showed up to my place with two of them, both large and both with an extra shot. I had a GREAT time, and enjoyed good drinks with good company, and shared Blue Hawaiians and Pina Coladas with my friends.

So, the next time you are looking for a laid back spot at which to enjoy a good meal and good drinks, stop by New Apollo and ask for one of their neighborhood famous Blue Hawaiians. The large is $20 (remember it is top shelf liquor). I guarantee, if you like good Chinese food and you love Blue Hawaiians, you will surely enjoy yourself.

My First Entry

I'm starting this blog to introduce the world to every day, yet unforgettable little moments, experiences and events in My New York City.  I'm targeting everyone, from the person who never visited us, to the person who has been here once or twice, to that person who makes it a habit to visit us constantly, and yes, I'm even targeting those New Yorkers that refuse to leave their comfort zone.  The name mentions Big Apple Moments, but I promise to be diverse in my posts and write about Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and the Bronx. I don't plan to venture into Long Island and Staten Island just yet, but will leave that as a possible option for the future.

I will need your help. I want feedback. I want suggestions. I want ideas. I want invitations. Tell me where you are and why I should be there, and I promise to do my very best to visit your favorite corner, your favorite shop, your favorite business, your favorite spot in NY. I'll be doing this alone, so please send me your invitations and I will respond to each invitation in the order that it is received.

I plan to write reviews for each one of the spots that I visit. I am probably one of the easiest people in the world to please. So if you want me to visit your favorite spot in NYC, shoot me an invitation. Please include a name and phone number for me to reply to. I will contact you and set up a date to visit you. I will then write my review the following day.
